Whether Wayfarer sunglasses conjure up images of James Dean, Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan or Beyonce and Justin Timberlake, the Ray Ban Wayfarer has been the sunglasses of choice for celebrities since they first appeared on the shelves in the 1950’s; yes, that long ago!
The likes of Marilyn Monroe, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison and James Dean started making the style hugely popular during the 50’s and 60’s, wearing them stylishly on television and in their movies and whilst the style may have taken a back seat during the 70’s due to lack of celebrity endorsement, they saw a massive comeback in the 80’s.
Tom Cruise could have worn a bin bag in the 80’s let’s face it, but the fact that he wore Wayfarer’s in his film Risky Business, could have maybe had something to do with the styles sudden rise in popularity!
For me I have to admit that there was a time in the 90’s when Wayfarer’s went from Madonna super cool status to Men in Black, um a little un-cool dare I say it – it’s just my personal opinion, but with Ray Ban product placement at a continual high, the style was inevitably going to remain popular and stick around.
I guess it was quite unfortunate that the wrap around frame became popular during this time too (I never understood that one!) as this must have also contributed to the Wayfarer’s unpopularity but with yet another comeback just around the corner, I guess Ray Ban were just biding their time.
The 00’s saw the style undergo a massive redesign, making the frames smaller and less angular and intended at making them easier to wear. The style was updated with a variety of colours too (with Ray-Ban remix letting you create your own custom specs), which ticked a lot of boxes for a lot of celebrities but personally I do sometimes feel that original is best and I definitely feel that way about the Wayfarer.
If you want stylish eye wear that even vampires will be seen dead in (excuse the pun but Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies did look pretty cool), then in my opinion, the original black frames like these Ray Ban’s available at Shade Station are as cool as they come. Stylish, classic, timeless.
Worn by both male and female celebrities alike, this style is and will always remain a classic. With oversized sunglasses currently being so popular and so many stockists selling Ray Ban Wayfarers, you really should try them if you haven’t already.
The Ray Ban Wayfarer isn’t going anywhere. So I guess it’s time we all gave in and owned a pair!
